The Day; The Same, The Different

A looping animation, immersive soundscape and set of printed works, portraying the constants and variables of every-day life. Follow a hypothetical week’s journey of morning alarms, bird songs, work-life, notifications, a day of basket-ball, socialising, beeping cars and cancelled trains, whilst noting how these factors make us feel along the way.
This project is a metaphorical interpretation of the order & chaos of the human experience, exploring how our inner-state and narrative changes with time. There are always ups and downs; an ever evolving tapestry and series of fleeting compositions, filling each blank canvas laid out in our calendars and diaries. We may lead vastly different lives, but we share certain themes and daily rhythms, from the morning commute, to the basic necessities like food and water.
As emotional beings, we go through varying inner-states, represented by the animated pulsating orb in the centre of the work. As it transitions from red (negative), to orange (neutral), to yellow (positive), it grows and shrinks, accompanied by fluctuating textures. This digestible interpretation visually expresses the vast array of ways we can feel: we are happy, we are sad, we are content, we are bored, we are angry, we are inspired, we are jealous, we are hungry, we are tired, we are anxious, we feel safe, we are relaxed, we are excited, we are depressed, we are in love, we are alive, we are… human.
Clouded — Post Card / Print
Inner-State — How you feel, your state of being.
Sea of Narrative — Your flow of thoughts, themes and events in life (centre stage, or droning in the background).
External Factors — External things to you (e.g cancelled trains) that affect your inner-state.
The animation was accompanied by a large A0 calendar, comparing the differences and similarities between days, summarising each hour represented in the animation as singular frames. The work was printed on high quality, textured "wallpaper" card so that the texture in the animation would carry over well and enhance the water colour appearance, whilst still all be digitally made.
